Our goal has always been to clarify and simplify complex business challenges. Here’s a timeline of our innovation journey:

Launching an innovation movement

1999-2009 (THE ORIGINS)

The introduction of the Business Model Canvas – the first in a series of simple, practical, and visual business tools that would change the innovation landscape.

Alex Osterwalder works with Prof. Yves Pigneur on a PhD thesis titled “Business Model Ontology”, at the University of Lausanne in Switzerland.

The thesis is developed into the Business Model Canvas. It rapidly grows in popularity and becomes one of the most well recognized and used business tools around.

An essential tool for corporate innovators and entrepreneurs, the canvas becomes a pivotal piece at the heart of the launch of the lean startup movement.

Equipping innovators to succeed

2010-2016 (THE FOUNDATION)

Strategyzer establishes training, tools, programs, as well as a global network of expert coaches and advisors – all to equip corporate innovators for success.

At Steve Blank’s ranch in California, the early Strategyzer team brainstorm a platform. Two years later in 2012, we launch the web app – combining testing with business model and value proposition design.

From client feedback, it becomes clear that people are struggling to fully adopt an innovation mindset and skillset. Our response is a series of online courses and another tool: the Value Proposition Canvas.

We find that innovation is still seen as a black box. We guide firms to adopt an evidence-based innovation investment approach and help enterprises set up their innovation portfolio, programs, and culture. We also launch a regular intensive training course for innovation coaches.

Enabling enterprises to grow

2017-PRESENT (THE ACCELERATION)

We package outcome-focused coaching and program management with industry-defining tools and training – all with a platform that makes innovation repeatable, scalable and transparent.

Clients need extra coaching in testing business ideas and designing superior business models. We develop a library of lean startup business experiments and create a library of business model patterns. Both help make complex innovation practice accessible to anyone.

We codify years of knowledge and experience into new tools and resources. We develop The Portfolio Map to help companies improve existing business models while exploring new growth engines – and we develop The Culture Map to help organisations design an innovation culture.

In 2020, we launch our Growth Portfolio and a new version of our platform, allowing companies to immediately apply and use our world class methodology and process at scale. Companies now have a turnkey solution for turning ideas into businesses.
